Love and danger on the coast of Maine -- Twilight at Blueberry Barrens

Colleen Coble provides just the right blend of suspense and romance in Twilight at Blueberry Barrens, the conclusion of her Sunset Cove series set in a small town on the coast of Maine.  This may well be the best of the several books I have read by this author.

As in Colleen's other books, it does little good to think you have the mysteries all figured out; there are plenty of plot twists to keep you guessing throughout the story.  There is an element of faith that plays out well in the story.  And the character development deals with issues of putting the past in perspective and learning to be prepared for the opportunities the future presents.

This book could be read as a stand-alone.  But it is much better to have read the earlier books in the series, especially The Inn at Ocean's Edge, to better understand some of the characters and their stories.

I highly recommend Twilight at Blueberry Barrens and the rest of this series to fans of great Christian romantic suspense.  Thanks to BookLook Bloggers for providing a copy in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

"I need you to keep these girls safe . . .”

Kate Mason has devoted herself to caring for her family’s blueberry barrens. But after her fields stop producing fruit, she’s forced to come up with alternative ways to make a living.

Renting out the small cottage on her property seems an obvious choice, but it won’t be enough. When entrepreneur Drake Newham shows up looking not only for a place to rent but also for a nanny for his two nieces, it’s almost too good to be true. And maybe it is—because Drake brings with him dangerous questions about who might be out to kill his family. The more time Kate spends with Drake and the girls, the more difficult it becomes to hide her attraction to him. But a family crisis isn’t exactly the ideal time to pursue a romance.

Meanwhile, Kate learns that her uncle—in prison for murder—has escaped. Add to that a local stalker who won’t leave her alone, and Kate is looking over her shoulder at every turn. With threats swirling from multiple directions, she wonders if her blueberry fields will ever flourish again . . . or if this twilight is her last.

Set on the beautiful coast of Maine, Twilight at Blueberry Barrens brings together suspense, romance, and the hope that one day new life will come again.

Sweet Christmas novella -- God Bless Us Every One (with giveaway)

(Be sure and read to the end of the post for a chance to win your own copy of the book.)

Eva Marie Everson's God Bless Us Every One is a sweet Christmas novella that will bring a smile to your face and a tug on your heart.

As is necessary because of the short length of a novella, things move very fast in this story packed with loss, love, forgiveness, and redemption. While this is not an updated retelling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, that classic does play a prominent role.  And Eva weaves some interesting background from Dickens' life and writing into her story.  (In fact, I realized that I have never actually read A Christmas Carol, and this just may be the inspiration I need to do that.)

If you're looking for a light, fun, one-evening read to get you started in the Christmas spirit, I would recommend God Bless Us Every One.  You just might come face to face with some reminders about trust and forgiveness before you're through.

Thanks to Litfuse Publicity Group for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Charlene Dixon—called Charlie by family and friends—is devastated at the recent loss of her job.

For the last five years, the twenty-seven-year-old has blossomed as the activities director of an exclusive all-girls school. But when a misunderstanding with the headmistress leads to a pink slip right before the holidays, Charlie packs up her dreams and returns to her grandmother, Sis, who raised Charlie as her own in the mountains of North Carolina.

When Charlie arrives—broken and confused—Sis immediately puts her granddaughter to work behind the scenes of the local school’s Christmas play, A Christmas Carol. Charlie prickles at working with Dustin Kennedy, the drama teacher and her old crush from schooldays, but is even more put out at that the choice of the Dickens’ classic for the holiday performance. When she discovers her estranged father’s involvement her world turns on its head once more. But when Sis and Dustin encourage her to take a deeper look at the story behind A Christmas Carol, Charlie learns about trust, faith, and forgiveness and the needs of people in their own community.

Fantastic series beginning -- Made with Love

Made with Love is the beginning of a very enjoyable series of Amish stories set in Pinecraft, Florida.  The series is co-authored by Tricia Goyer and Sherry Gore.  Tricia has already written some great Amish fiction; Sherry adds an insider's touch, as she has been a resident of Pinecraft for several years.

The characters are delightful folks that it would be fun to meet.  The Miller family, with five unmarried daughters, provides a wide-range of personalities and interests.  As you read the story, you begin to get to know the entire family, even as the focus is on the oldest daughter, Lovina.

The excellent writing makes it very easy to get caught up in Lovina's dream for a pie shop and Noah's hope of proving that second chances can make a big difference in the lives of people and in things. The struggles and challenges they both face as they work on this ambitious project make for an extremely engaging story.

And there are so many mouth-watering recipes sprinkled throughout the book that it's almost like getting a bonus cookbook along with the story.

For all fans of great Amish fiction, I highly recommend all three volumes in this Pinecraft Pie Shop series.

See my reviews for Planted with Hope and Sewn with Joy.

About the Book:

A Dash of Love, a Pinch of Hope, and a Whole Lot of Good Cooking

Lovina Miller should be thrilled. Pinecraft, Florida, has everything a young Amish woman could ask for: sun, sand, volleyball games, and evening singings in the park. But Pinecraft lacks the one thing Lovina desperately wants—a pie shop of her own. She longs for a place to gather with the community and serve the treat she loves.

A young carpenter named Noah Yoder strolls into her life and offers a way to make her dream come true. But before Noah and Lovina can build a shop—and a life—together, they must each face heartaches from the past. Is their new love stronger than their regrets?

Find inspiration, romance, and authentic Amish recipes for everyone’s favorite food—pie!

Complex story in Pinecraft -- Sewn with Joy

Sewn with Joy is perhaps the most complex of the stories in The Pinecraft Pie Shop series by Tricia Goyer and Sherry Gore.

The third of the Miller daughters, Joy, seems to have found the answer to one of her greatest dreams -- an outstanding young bishop's son who appears pleased to consider her for marriage.  But life in the little Amish community of Pinecraft changes quickly when Englishers arrive to film a television show.  Suddenly, Joy is very much involved in their business, and that fact seems to tear apart her dream to be a traditional wife and mother.

This story involves a wide range of issues on the parts of both the Amish residents and English visitors in Pinecraft.  The deep meaning of God's love and the mission of His people to share that love cause the lives of several to be turned topsy-turvy before finding the paths they are intended to follow.

Although not as many as in the first book of the series, you will once again get the bonus of several delightful recipes throughout the story.

For all fans of great Amish fiction, I highly recommend all three volumes in this Pinecraft Pie Shop series.

See my reviews for Made with Love and Planted with Hope.

About the Book:

Sometimes Dreams Come Together One Piece at a Time

Joy Miller wanted nothing more than to be a wife and mother—especially now that her relationship with Matthew Slagel, the bishop’s son, was deepening. But when a television crew rolls into Pinecraft, Florida, to film a new show about the Amish, tension threatens to rip apart their relationship…and the entire Amish community.

Joy is initially hired to sew costumes for the show, but she soon finds herself becoming increasingly involved in the production—a fact that upsets Matthew and his father. Yet the more Joy befriends the Englischer production crew, the more she senses God working in their lives through her. Can she turn her back on this opportunity to share God’s love? Will she and Matthew somehow be able to stitch together their dreams for the future?

Experience love, heartbreak, and hope in this sweet story of two worlds uniting in unexpected ways.

An epic story crossing centuries -- My Sister's Prayer

In My Sister's Prayer, Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould weave an epic tale across centuries.  As in the first book of the Cousins of the Dove series, two stories unfold, bringing a modern family to a greater understanding of the strength that runs in their family's history.

Blending the stories from two different time periods was surely a challenge, but Mindy and Leslie did a fantastic job.  The characters from both settings were well developed, people whose stories were intriguing and kept this reader's interest at a very high level.  Watching the two stories merge made for an extremely engaging read.

The continuing thread of mystery from book one was an important element that will hopefully be resolved as the series continues.  And there was plenty of interesting history to be learned about the early days of Virginia.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good fiction, both contemporary and historical.

Thanks to the authors and their publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

The dashing soldier? Or the vigilant carpenter who remains by their side in the perilous New World?

Virginia, present day

Madeline "Maddee" Talbot has her hands full when she agrees to take in her younger sister Nicole following a serious car accident. The young women grew apart when Nicole fell into drug addiction, and Maddee prays this will be the start of a better life for her sister. Unusual setting for an Amish story -- The Hawaiian Quilt

Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, even Florida . . . but Hawaii?  Not the setting you would expect for an Amish story.  But that is exactly where Wanda and Jean Brunstetter take us in their latest Amish novel -- The Hawaiian Quilt.

Mandy Frey has a strong desire to visit Hawaii before she makes the all-important decision to join the Amish church.  She and her three best friends decide to travel by train from their home in Indiana and then take a cruise to visit several of the Hawaiian islands.  After Mandy and Ellen miss the boat at one of the ports of call, they end up making an extended stay before returning home and being faced with unexpected decisions.

The Hawaiian Quilt is an enjoyable story, with several interesting characters.  Mixed with some traditional Amish elements is a lot of Hawaiian flavorSome of the details and dialogue tend to bog down the flow of the story somewhat, but all in all it is a nice Amish story.  Difficult decisions about faith, church, and family keep the interest level up, and even the title leaves you wondering how the quilt will play into the plot until near the end.  Amish fiction fans should enjoy this latest Brunstetter book.

Thanks to Wanda Brunstetter and her publisher for providing a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Mandy Frey has always longed to see Hawaii, so before joing the Amish church and considering marriage to her boyfriend, Gideon, she convinces three friends to join her on a cruise of the Hawaiian Islands.

Captured by the enchanting scenery and culture in Hawaii, their vacation turns into an extended stay.  Special friendships are soon made, but home, family, and Gideon await Mandy back in Indiana.

Will time away from the Amish community change Mandy's view of the world, her faith, and true love?  Does a Hawaiian quilt have the power to bring two hearts together?

Great suspense -- Without Warning

"And sometimes when something precious is lost, he [God] makes sure we get it back so that we'll cherish it even more than we did before."

This was one of my favorite truths in Lynette Eason's newest work of fiction.

**************************

Lynette Eason has written lots of great suspense, but Without Warning, the second book in her Elite Guardians series, just may be her best yet! The thrill starts on the very first page and keeps you anxiously turning pages to the end.

As usual, Lynette fills her story with an exciting cast of characters who keep the action moving.  Katie Singleton and her associates from the Elite Guardians Agency are back and kept busy in a series of frightening events.  Daniel Matthews and his niece Riley find themselves in need of the skills of that group of professionals.

The suspense moves at just the right pace, keeping the story continually fresh.  There are enough clues and questions, twists and turns to make you suspect different characters without knowing for sure "who dun it" until the end.  The romantic element is just right as well, never overpowering the suspense but always complementing it.  And the faith of the characters shines through in very comfortable ways that appear natural, rather than forced or stiff.

Fans of great Christian romantic suspense should enjoy Without Warning.  Reading Always Watching, book one in the series, is not necessary for enjoying this story, but I would highly recommend that one as well.  And I'm anxious to see what's next when Moving Target comes out next spring!

Thanks to Lynette and her publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Intensity. Skill. Tenacity.
The bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency have it all.

Katie Singleton, a partner with the Elite Guardians Protection Agency, stumbles upon her next assignment quite by accident. Spotting blue lights at a familiar restaurant, she stops to investigate, only to discover that owner Daniel Matthews has become the target of someone who will go to any lengths to put him out of business.

Daniel might be concerned, but he's not convinced that a bodyguard--and a female one at that--is necessary. A new attack and his niece's urgings are enough to make him reconsider. He and Katie must figure out who's behind the intimidation and threats--before a would-be killer strikes again.
